Independent Reading In English 2B


Purpose: ALL the research shows how important it is to read independently. Students who read score higher on all standardized tests in nearly every category: vocabulary, sentence structure, reading comprehension, etc. Also, reading can become something you can love your entire life!! Thus, we teachers at Boone High School want to encourage all BHS students to be reading.

Requirements:
1. Students must read 2 novels each semester—one each quarter
2. Students are able to choose any novel
3. Students must blog about their reading every two weeks
4. Students must complete a Book Talk with the teacher for final credit
5. Students must have their novel with them each day.

Due Dates:
Tuesday, Aug. 31—have novel in class and signed in with teacher
Monday, Sept. 13—first blog due
Monday Sept. 27—second blog due
Monday, Oct. 11—third blog due (no school that day, so plan ahead if no
internet at home)
Week of Oct. 18—Teacher conference over novel—Novel #1

Monday, Nov. 8—second novel in class and signed in
Monday, Nov. 22—first blog of novel 2 due
Monday, Dec. 13—second blog of novel 2 due
Week of Jan. 3, 2011—teacher conferences over novel—Novel #2

Blog Requirements: Class Blog Pages
1. Write in a narrative style. Writing should be of a high quality. After all, it
is being published on line.
2. The first blog should include the following information:
a. The title of the novel and the author
b. Why did you choose this novel? Was is recommended?
c. Where did you find the novel? A library? Did you buy it?
3. ALL blogs should include the following information:
a. Summary of what you have read so far
b. Reactions to what you read: Do you like the characters? Why or why not? What message do you find in the story, if any? Are you confused over any part of the story? How do you handle that? What do you think of the storyline? Is it realistic? Interesting?
